I have head lice and cant seem to get rid of it?

basically i first caught them off a friend who is riddled with them. i find its a reoccuring matter once i think i have got rid of them all i check my head the next day and i have more lice again, i have real problems picking out the eggs as they are well and truly glued onto the hair. i have really long thick hair and i dont really want to cut it short. i have been battling this problem for the last 3 months and now its just driving me mad. and what makes it worse is im 22 and im a bit paranoid people see me scratching my head and that they can see lice and eggs. what can i do to get rid of the lice for good need serious answers and real help please as this is embarrasing at my age.
