Question Details
In November my TSH was 5.230 and the doc put me on a low dose of Synthroid. I had a retest done yesterday and my level was .081 and they are cutting me to 1/2 a tablet a day. I am TOTALLY confused. Is there anyone that can explain this tome.

I'll try to explain how your thyroid gland works and then you'll understand why your doctor decreased your dosage.

TSH stands for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, it acts on your thyroid to make Thyroid Hormones which are T3 and T4

TSH is only a stimulating hormone, so its level goes down if the thyroid hormone levels in your body are sufficient. This process is called negative feed back.

Similarly, the TSH levels will go UP when the thyroid hormone levels in your body are not enough.

Back in November, your TSH level was high, so that means your thyroid gland wasn't producing enough hormones, and you were diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. So you were given Synthroid, which is a replacement for your thyroid hormone.

When they retested your TSH levels, they found out that your levels were too low, so that means there was more than enough thyroid hormone than that is needed from the Synthroid, which is making the TSH too low. And that is why they decreased your dosage to 1/2 a tablet. Hope this helps. Tc
